Ecology games are an emerging vehicle to improve environmental literacy for students, teachers and the public. We will introduce and explore 3 ecological or environmental learning games that have been tested with K-12 students in classrooms and informal learning environments, teacher professional development workshops and public meetings for citizen scientists. Two of the games Econauts and Citizen are video games designed for ipads and computers, respectively. One of the games that we will feature is a board game, Dwindle, developed by a teacher in a games development workshop for teachers. Games have been designed to teach especially difficult to see and understand concepts such as time lags, multiple spatio-temporal drivers, cause and effect versus correlation, socio-ecological-economic interactions and tragedy of the commons. We will share tools and instruments for assessing learning gains and report on results of research on Econauts and Citizen Science. We will play all 3 games and participants will have the opportunity to create their own maps for use at their own with Econauts. Econauts is a map based game and our hope is to add maps that you develop based on ecosystems in your particular LTER site for you and others to use with students and teachers in your own outreach and education activities. Participants please bring laptops and ipads if you have them.
