As many states adopt/implement the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), SBC sLTER continues to develop content to support relevant science curricula around project-, and place-based learning focused on ocean science associated with kelp forest ecology in the temperate marine waters of Southern California. The focus of sLTER programming is on transforming science content knowledge through strategic teacher professional development AND place-based experiential learning for P-20 students in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Kern, and West LA counties. This is accomplished through a model of learning progression teaching strategies, cooperative learning processes, and the utilization of real-world issues. The goal is to develop critical thinking skills for the next generation, that are not only key to their success in STEM-based careers, but that are also imperative for a scientifically literate society in a changing climate.
